Bike Profile
Is it a "motorcycle" or is it a "scooter" is the common debate that surrounds Aprilia's big bore Atlantic 500.She looks like a scooter but also feels and rides somewhat like a motorcycle.
She's big weighing in at 425 pounds, is quick off the line and will cruise comfortably at around 80mph although pushed the 460cc fuel-injected four-valve single will take you over the 100mph mark.
She's also roomy, exceedingly comfortable and has great storage space (47 litres under the seat!).
So who's it for?
At base the Atlantic 500 is a versatile, do all "scootercycle" for the urban playground but also has the guts, road presence and weather protection to be durable as a mid-size cross-state tourer or all-weather commuter.
It is touted by Aprillia as "the new frontier of pleasure on two wheels" and in many ways Aprilia has hit the nail on the head with a refreshing and unqiue take on the scooter / motorcycle which has created a lot of fans across the country.
At $5,699 new the Atlantic 500 is also much closer to motorcycle rather than scooter prices but you're getting quite a bit of machinery for your money and as you'll see below - significant savings can be made by buying on the used market.
Comparison bikes are the Suzuki Burgman 400, Honda Reflex and the 582cc Silver Wing.
Advantages: great comfort, good road holding, smooth grunty motor, large underseat storage, high mile per gallon.
Disadvantages: Quite heavy, some known reliability problems, poor dealer network compared to other manufacturers.
