Bike Profile
If you love riding fast and curvy A and B roads or you are or are becoming a track addict you'll find it hard to find something as fun, ferocious and focussed as the little but exceedingly powerful Aprilia RS 250.Powered by a six speed 249cc liquid cooled two stroke 90° V-twin it is what it is - a high revving, ride me like you stole me, head down, smile underneath your visor motorcycle.
It has a very tight optimum rev range of about 2500rpm that you can play with (between 8,000rpm and where the engine delivers its peak 56bhp at 10,500rpm). Below 8,000 rpm it's working but sleeping and if you fall outside of this optimum rev range the motor bogs down. To enjoy the bike you really have to have it and yourself in the zone and if you want to ride, or are capable of riding that way, you'll get the most out of both the bike and yourself.
Because of the engine configuration and it's comparative low power (ie compared to the supersports and superbikes) riding the RS 250 also teaches you a lot about riding correctly - right gear at the right time, getting the most out of each gear etc etc.
For urban traffic, straight A-roads and motorways this gem of a motorcycle is wasted but take it to the right roads and get on it in the right frame of mind and there aren't many bikes that are just plain and simple as much of a laugh as the RS 250 and it's all wrapped in a beautifull skin.
However, like all the Aprilia sportbikes it requires the correct (and expensive oil) on a regular basis, constant maintenance and attention and a proper warming up routine - don't ride it cold and definitely don't ride it hard when cold.
It's not practical, it's not the most powerful bike, it's not the quickest but get into the 8000rpm to 9000rpm range put your head down and focus on the road and you'll feel like you're on a race bike.
A classic 250 that due to emission laws is no longer made but is still readily available on the used market as you'll see below.
Advantages: Screaming two stroke motor, low weight, refined suspension and handling, beautiful racing lines.
Disadvantages: High maintenance, regular servicing required, expensive oil required to maintain motor at optimum level.
