The Aprilia RST Futura is one of those bikes that missed the mark on launch. Aprilia had heralded it as a legitimate competitor to the long time valued Honda VFR 800 but when released it was criticized for being over-priced with poor styling and lastest only 3 years in production from 2001 to 2003.However, as a long legged sports tourer it's actually a fine bike with a well respected Rotax built 60-degree V-twin engine providing the power plant for a bike that although without the tip end of the RSV or the hearty mid-range of the VFR provides a solid foundation for long distance fun and comfort.
As a sports tourer it is more tourer and less sport than BMWs R1100s, the Triumph Sprints or the Honda Interceptor with suspension a little on the soft side and it's weight a little on the heavy side. Weather protection is good though as is the finish, it can be loaded with luggage and there have been no reliability issues or recalls noted.
If you want a very solid sports tourer which will take you where you want in the manner that you want then the RST Futura is well worth a look.
Because it never caught on as a model, the new bikes depreciated massively and secondhand Futuras can be had for a bargain - much lower than similar year competitors noted above.
Advantages: Very comfortable sports tourer, bullet proof Rotax engine, solid handling and brakes, under-appreciated so available on used market for good price.
Disadvantages: Small mirrors giving restricted rear view, relatively poor Aprilia dealer network, difficult machine to self service.
