Bike Profile
The BMW R1150RT is a powerful touring motorcycle designed for the long distance rider. It also works quite well for the stop light to stop light daily grind of driving back and forth to work. It is comfortable enough for two people and has plenty of removable storage for those long trips. It also comes with an AM/FM/Weather Band/Cassette stereo, an adjustable windshield, heated hand grips, externally adjustable rear suspension and fully integrated EVO anitlock brakes. And don’t forget about the fog lights.
The engine is BMW’s big horizontally-opposed twin boxer engine and it is attached to a six-speed gearbox, allowing total performance in normal riding conditions. It runs the quarter-mile in 12.68 seconds at 105.76 mph. This powerhouse is helped along with four valves per cylinder, and puts out 95 hp at 7,250 rpm and 72.3 foot pounds of torque at 5,500 rpm.
The front suspension is BMW’s Telelever system, and the rear is their Paralever system. The stopping power comes from two four-piston EVO calipers and floating 320 mm discs on the front and a two-piston claliper and 276 mm disc on the rear.
The BMW R1150RT’s trademark twin kidney shaped grills allows for optimum air intake and oil cooler operation, and compliments the rounded shape of the exterior surfaces. This rounded shape gives the bike the ability to deal quite well with high crosswinds – a must when traveling in all types of weather.
The one disadvantage to this bike is the seat height – it is adjustable, which does help, but the adjustments range from 31.7 through 33.3 inches. That makes it a bit difficult for shorties – vertically challenged, if you must be PC – to handle it in less than optimum conditions (such as dirt track riding), but if you are used to tippy-toeing at a stop, this well-balanced bike’s height should not bother you. The handlebars are also adjustable to the rider.
