Bike Profile
The BMW R75 was first produced in 1941. Production on this bike ended in 1944 with about 18,000 produced. It had a 745cc four-stroke twin engine fueled by twin carbs – the Graetzin Sa 24/1 and Sa 24/2. It had four road gears (plus one reverse gear) and three off road gears (plus one reverse gear). The BMW R75 was produced again in the ‘70s as the R75/5. The R75/5 has a 750cc four-stroke, two-cylinder boxer engine that is air-cooled.
This bike, as was the bike in the ‘40s, is a cruiser, and was built to get people from one place to the next. It has a horsepower rating of 50hp at 6,200 rpm and torques out at 43 foot pounds at 5,000 rpm. The R75/5 hits speeds up to 109mph, and goes from 0 to 62mph in 6.4 seconds.
The newer ‘70s models offered 12 volts instead of the six volts offered on the ‘40s models and also offered electrical starters (and retained the kick start), telescopic forks and better brakes. For the first time, BMW added non-metallic fenders and taillight housings.
The double-loop tubular frame sports a telescopic fork with a hydraulic shock absorber for the front suspension and a long swing arm and strut for the rear suspension. The front brakes provide stopping power via duplex-drum brakes and the rear, simplex drum brakes.
