The Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 is a custom cruiser, and one of the last bikes made to vibrate your body off the bike. In 2004, Harley added stabilizer links on the sportsters to dampen the vibration, though the 1200 vibrates more than the 883. The bike is made for tooling around town, or even making a nice trip here and there, but the ergonomics of the seat won’t let you sit on the bike for much more than a few hours.

The air-cooled engine is the same as the 883, but has bigger bores, giving it 1200 cubic centimeters. It can also rev higher, and uses hotter cams, has better cooling and stiffer compression. It redlines at 5500 to 6000 rpm. It is all backed by a five-speed transmission and belt drive.

The brakes are single piston, single rotor brakes, and work just fine with regular stopping, but be careful of those panic stops. The suspension, Harley’s standby, is nothing to brag about. For long trips, be prepared to hop off every few hours and give your butt a rest.

The newer bikes still hold only 3.3 gallons of gas. It weighs in at about 555 pounds dry (no gas or oil) and gets excellent gas mileage, so you can still take a longer trip without stopping every time you pass a gas station. This is a perfect bike for dolling up for bike shows and cruising around town for some extra attention.
