The Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Sport is a sport-cruiser that can compete with the semi-sporting bikes. It has a 3.3-gallon fuel tank, so even though the bike can do some twisties – be prepared to hit the gas stations sooner than if you were riding one of the larger models with the bigger tanks. The seat is somewhat comfortable, but if you want to take a serious tour, you may want to change it out, if it hasn’t been done already.The air-cooled 1200cc Evo motor is quite torquey, but doesn’t give much in the way of horsepower. Since it is a light bike at 497 pounds (dry), Harley did not see the need to put a ton of power in the engine. It is backed by a five-speed transmission and a final belt drive.
The suspension is different for the first time in 1996 – this sportster 1200S is the on-road bike to use the Showa adjustable sporting suspension. There are numerous adjustments on the suspension. The brakes have also changed on this bike – it now has dual floating discs on the front.
The Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Sport also has some other “firsts” from Harley – the new 13-spoke cast aluminum wheels, Dunlop K591 Sport Elite tires, a sporty seat with a textured insert with the Sportster logo embroidered in it and flat, sporty-style handlebars. The seat height is a little higher than on some of the other sportsters – it sits at 28.9 inches – toes will be tipping on this bike for the shorter people, but not as bad as on a touring bike.
