The Harley-Davidson Sportster Ironhead has a lot of story and character to it. It is a cruiser (sportster) and it is made for someone who wants to cruise the town or go back and forth to work. Most of these old Ironheads have been changed by their owners. People have added bigger fuel tanks, different handle bars, changed some of the sheet metal on the bike, added forward controls and other things to make this bike into more of a touring cruiser than a short-haul cruiser.

The Ironhead started out in 1957 and was one of the first engines to use the overhead cam design. It lasted through 1986, when the Evo motor took over. The older, classic sportsters had a single seat – then eventually they moved up to a seat for riding two up. They also came with a right side shift, a kick start and a single disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the rear.

The old Ironheads are well known for their vibration and leaking, so it is advised that should you decide to brave the vibrations and take a long trip, be sure you have a tool pack with you. Even though they have their share of problems, the old Ironheads get more stares than some of the newer bikes – at least from the old-timers who remember them!
