The Harley Davidson Road King is a touring bike, geared for a rider who likes long, cross-country tours. The saddlebags are leather-covered and are quite spacious, but they do not lock. The handlebars leave something to be desired, as they position your hands at a sideways angle, but if you do not feel comfortable with them, they are easily replaced, if they have not already been replaced.

The air-cooled engine is 88 cubic inches with four valves per cylinder backed by a five-speed transmission. It puts out 68 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 71 foot pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm.

Though it is not a racing bike, it has been track tested to 14.02 seconds at 91.6 miles per hours. The average fuel mileage is 46 miles per gallon. If you baby it, it will get better; if you crank it open, it will get less.

The seat height is a nice 26.1 inches. The front suspension is non-adjustable 42mm fork and the rear suspension uses dual shocks, which are adjustable. The Road King has more than enough braking power, but you may have to romp down on the brakes if you are going along at a pretty strong clip.

The seating position of the Harley Davidson Road King puts the rider in a laid back position, making those long trips one of the more comfortable bike rides. The chrome floorboards limit cornering clearance. All in all, this a quite a stylish bike, no matter what year you choose.
