The Goldwing tradition continued in 1984 with the introduction of the GL1200. This bigger and better version of the ultimate touring bike came in standard and fully dressed models which Honda deemed the 'Interstate' versions and became the darling of touring bikers everywhere. Even with its big engine and massive weight the GL1200 is capable of 52 mpg and its 1182cc engine gives reliable performance for over 100,000 miles making it an incredibly durable and affordable form of luxury transportation.

The mighty engine didn't necessarily equate with more speed although the Goldwing GL1200 is capable of speeds up to 115 mph. It was a lot of bike to push around, weighing in at 600 pounds so the big bore engine had its work cut out for it with this baby. Producing more torque than speed it is nevertheless a nice quiet bike as motorcycles go making it a true 'gentleman' of motorcycles.

None of the Goldwings are especially friendly to smaller riders who don't have the power to push around such a massive machine but Honda did make some curious but effective adjustments such as a small front wheel (compared to the huge size of the bike) that made it feel lighter in handling. However, drop one of these bikes and you better have a big set of biceps to pick it back up again.

Riders the world over looking for a long distance bike that will provide a magnificent ride look to the Goldwing series and the GL1200 as the bike to buy. Its size can be a hindrance but it is also what makes it such a lavish piece of work as well. No matter where it goes heads will turn. It is arguably one of the most beautiful touring bikes ever produced.
