The KTM 990 Adventure is a powerful travel enduro bike. It is like the 950 Adventure, but it has greater displacement, ABS brakes, a regulated cat converter and electronic fuel injection (EFI). It is for the grown up with some kid still left in him. There are two 990 Adventures – the 990 Adventure and the 990 Adventure S.

Both bikes have a 2 cylinder, 4-stroke 75-degree v-twin with 999 cubic centimeters and both put out 72 kW at 8,5000 rpm and 95 Nm (torque) at 6,500 rpm. The Adventure has a five-speed transmission to help get the power to the rear wheels, but the Adventure 990S has a six-speed transmission. Both are claw shifted. Both bikes use electronic fuel injection to get the “good stuff” to the cylinders.

Both bikes have a powder coated, chomoly space frame with an aluminum subframe. The rear suspension uses a shock with hydraulic spring preload. The front and suspension on the 990 travels 210 mm and the front and rear on the 990S travels 245mm. Front brakes on both bikes are two Brembo double-piston floating calpiers and double 300mm discs and rear brakes on both bikes use a Brembo single piston floating caliper on a 240mm disc. The ABS option is Brembo two channel ABS on the 990.

The KTM 990 Adventure 990 and 990S both have massive torque for the long enduro runs. The ABS helps remove the fear of hard braking, so you can zoom up to the corners as fast as you can go and whale on the brakes to slow down for them (as much as you need to slow down – cornering is supposed to be fast with a lot of lean!).
