Bike Profile

One of the first v-twin engines with a shaft drive instead of chain or belt drive was the Yamaha Virago 535. For its engine class the v-twin 535cc powered cruiser was a real lightweight which made it perfect for lighter, smaller riders. It handled well and is still loved by many who have them in their garage. It makes a great first bike and its low 27 inch (686 mm) seat is easy to manage even for those who are inseam challenged.

The Yamaha Virago 535 is not a bike for wimps. It is a great beginner bike but has more power than its smaller brother the 250. It is capable of producing 44 horsepower (33 kW) at 7,500 rpm and rounding up 48 pounds of torque (4.9 kgf-m) at 6,000 rpms. While it is powerful it doesn't try to jump out from under its rider and gives a smooth ride thanks to the front travel telescope fork and the rear travel shock suspension.

It is a very long bike that along with its deep low seat gives it a really low center of gravity. That provides amazing stability however can make it a little clumsy in tight spaces. The Yamaha Virago 535 lead its class as a sales topper until it was discontinued in favor of Yamaha's famous V-Star lines. In spite of being out of production the Virago 535 remains a beloved bike the world over.

Advantages: Great lightweight cruiser in a higher engine class. Low seating for small riders.

Disadvantages: A bit short for really big riders. Very long to get around in short tight areas.
